Maintenance tips related to twin-screw extruder gearbox

In the daily production of twin-screw extruders, the gearbox needs to perform necessary maintenance work. The basic contents are as follows:

Twin screw extruder gearbox maintenance

  • The gear box of the twin-screw extruder main machine should be well ventilated, and the working environment temperature should be within the range of 5-35°C.
  • Frequently check the amount of gear lubricating oil in the box to ensure that the transmission parts in the box are well lubricated.
  • Pay attention to checking the bearing parts of the box frequently. The oil temperature of the oil tank of the transmission box should not exceed 70℃ during operation.
  • The lubricating oil of a newly put into use gearbox needs to be replaced after 250 hours of operation. The subsequent oil replacement time depends on the condition of the oil. It is recommended to replace it after 4000-8000 hours of operation or once a year.

The gearbox needs to undergo regular maintenance and inspection once a year. The work content is as follows:

  • Disassemble the gear box cover and check the wear and meshing conditions of the working surfaces of each transmission reduction gear. If there are burrs or shallow pits on the meshing surface, you can use a whetstone to grind them smoothly; gears with serious wear should be prepared to purchase accessories. Replace during next maintenance.
  • Check the wear of each bearing. Clean the bearing first and check whether there are cracks in the inner jacket. Observe the size of the idle running noise and the size of the radial gap. If no problem is found, add some grease and continue to use it. ​
  • Check whether the lubricating oil in the box is clean. If the oil is mixed with impurities or has a lot of metal powder, filter the lubricating oil to remove impurities, and then replenish the amount of lubricating oil. ​
  • After cleaning and inspecting the parts in the box, install the box cover; add enough grease to each bearing part, replace the oil seal with a new one, and tighten the bearing cover.
  • Clean the outside of the gear box to keep the equipment clean.

Principles for replacing parts in gear box

If there are deep wear pits on the involute meshing tooth surface of the gear, the noise is loud and irregular during working rotation, and there is frequent impact and vibration, the gear should be replaced. There are cracks in the inner sleeve or outer sleeve of the ball bearing, the ball frame is damaged, the radial gap of the inner sleeve is large, and the rotating outer sleeve bearing has loud rotation noise, etc. After cleaning the rolling bearing, if any of the above damage phenomena are found, the rolling bearing should be replaced.

Precautions for replacement and installation of gears and bearings

Gears and bearings must be cleaned and trimmed to remove burrs before installation. Check the size of the replacement gear hole, assembly shaft, key and keyway, and they should meet the matching tolerance requirements specified in the drawing. The replacement rolling bearing should be of the same model as the original bearing.
